Gay Guide to Negombo
Sri Lanka's laws apply here just as they do in the capital. Colonial-era sections of the penal code still criminalize same-sex activity on paper, enforcement is largely dormant, and a 2023 Supreme Court ruling cleared the way for a decriminalization bill that has yet to pass Parliament. The country's main LGBTQ+ celebration is Colombo Pride, about 35 km south.
Negombo sits on the west coast under 10 km from Bandaranaike International Airport, which makes it the first and last stop for many visitors to Sri Lanka. Centuries of Portuguese and Dutch rule left a deeply Catholic town, nicknamed "Little Rome," and its churches, Dutch-era fort gate and the Hamilton Canal still shape the old center beside the Negombo Lagoon.
For visitors, the action is on the beach strip along Poruthota Road in Ettukala, where hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and bars line the road just back from the sand. Most of the town's LGBTQ+-friendly places sit along this stretch, including a gay-owned restaurant and a French restaurant that openly calls itself gay friendly.
As in Colombo, discretion is the norm. There is no gay district or bar scene, public affection is not advisable, and queer life here is low-key and personal. Travelers rarely face practical legal risk, but the welcome is found venue by venue rather than across town.
