India decriminalized homosexuality in 2018 with the Supreme Court's landmark ruling, and Mumbai, the country's cosmopolitan heart and home of Bollywood, has the most visibly organized queer civil society in the nation, anchored by Humsafar Trust, India's oldest LGBTQ+ organization, founded in 1994.
There is no single gayborhood, but queer-friendly cafes, bars, and heritage hotels cluster in South Mumbai, around Colaba, Fort, and Marine Drive, and the scene runs on a lively circuit of parties. The city hosts Kashish, the largest queer film festival in South Asia, screening at a mainstream cinema each summer.
