About LGBTQ+ Kolkata
Kolkata holds a special place in India's LGBTQ+ history: the Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk, first held in 1999 as the Friendship Walk, was the earliest Pride march in India and South Asia, stepping off with just fifteen people from the Park Circus grounds. India decriminalized consensual same-sex relations in 2018 when the Supreme Court read down the colonial Section 377, and Kolkata's activists had been marching toward that day for two decades.
The city that calls itself the City of Joy carries a reputation as one of India's more intellectually open, and its queer culture leans literary and organized rather than club-driven. The Dialogues film festival, among the country's oldest LGBTQ+ film events, anchors the cultural calendar.

There is no dedicated gay district, and open nightlife is limited compared with Delhi or Mumbai, but Kolkata's community life runs deep through collectives, campus groups, and the annual Pride season each winter.
Public displays of affection still draw notice, and the scene is more about gatherings and events than a fixed set of venues, but few Indian cities can claim Kolkata's depth of queer history and organizing.
