Gay Guide to Lyon
France decriminalized homosexuality in 1791 and opened marriage to same-sex couples in 2013. Lyon, the country's gastronomic capital and second city, is home to one of the strongest and most organized LGBTQ+ communities in provincial France.
The scene concentrates on the Presqu'île, the narrow peninsula between the Rhone and Saone rivers, particularly around Place des Terreaux and the streets of the 1st and 2nd arrondissements. La Ruche, the city's oldest gay bar, anchors a compact cluster of bars, and the bohemian Croix-Rousse slopes just above add a second, mellower layer to the community.
Everything is walkable along the two riverbanks, and Lyon's cafe culture means the scene runs as much on terraces and daytime meetups as on late nights.
Lyon held one of France's earliest provincial Marche des Fiertes in the early 1990s, and the June parade still fills the Presqu'ile and the Saone quays with stages and crowds. It remains the highlight of the city's queer calendar.
