About LGBTQ+ Lyon
On 8 December 1981 an activist named Michel Branchu opened ARIS, a gay and lesbian welcome and information center, in a cul-de-sac on the slopes of the Croix-Rousse. Four days later Lyon saw a street demonstration in support of a lesbian couple fighting to keep custody of their child. Both landed in the months after France changed government: police files on homosexuals were being abolished, and in August 1982 parliament equalized the age of consent at fifteen, repealing the last criminal law that singled out same-sex relations.
The Presqu'île, the narrow peninsula between the Rhône and the Saône, holds most of the bars today, particularly the 1st arrondissement streets around Place des Terreaux. Queen Club on Rue Terme, XS Bar, L bar and Broc'Bar make up the core, Double Side covering the cruisier end, and the Oasis sauna on Rue Coustou.

Just above, the Croix-Rousse carries a quieter layer. It Pub sits on the Montée Saint-Sébastien, and the old silk-workers' district, with its hidden passageways and steep stairways, is where ARIS started and where a good deal of Lyon's alternative politics has always lived.
The Marche des Fiertés grew out of demonstrations that go back to 1979 and has run as an annual march since the mid-1990s, usually in early summer. In 2026 a split between organizers produced two separate marches. The Centre LGBTI+ Lyon carries the community work the rest of the year, and Café Rosa and La Chapelle Café cover the daytime.
Lyon is the food capital of France and its scene runs accordingly, as much on long lunches and terraces as on late nights. Everything is walkable along the two rivers, and the city rewards a few days far more than a single evening.
