About

About LGBTQ+ London

Male same-sex sexual activity between consenting adults aged 21+ was partially decriminalized in England and Wales under the Sexual Offences Act 1967. The equal age of consent (16) followed in 2000. The Civil Partnership Act passed in 2004. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 came into force in March 2014, legalizing same-sex marriage in England and Wales.

The historic gay neighborhood is Soho in the West End, centered on Old Compton Street between Charing Cross Road and Wardour Street. Several long-running gay venues on or near Old Compton Street include Comptons (founded 1986), the Admiral Duncan, G-A-Y Bar, the Yard, and Ku Bar.

Vauxhall, on the south bank of the Thames, has been a secondary gay-bar district since the 1990s, with a stronger leather and fetish presence than Soho. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, in continuous operation as a queer venue since the 1860s, is the United Kingdom's only Grade II listed gay pub. It was listed in 2015 for its cultural significance to the LGBTQ+ community.

East London (Dalston, Hackney, Bethnal Green, Shoreditch) became the city's primary queer nightlife district from the late 2000s onward. Notable East London queer venues include Dalston Superstore and the Glory. Clapham, south of the river, has Two Brewers, a long-running cabaret venue.

Pride in London is the official Pride parade, typically held in late June or early July, with a route through the West End ending at Trafalgar Square. UK Black Pride, founded in 2005, is the largest Pride event for Black, Asian, Middle Eastern, and Latin American LGBTQ+ people in Europe and runs separately in August. Trans Pride London runs in June, and Reclaim Pride, founded in 2023 in opposition to corporate sponsorship at the official Pride, organizes a separate march.

The BFI Flare film festival, held at the BFI Southbank each March, is one of the longest-running queer film festivals in the world (founded 1986). Manchester (a separate city, not part of London) hosts the larger Manchester Pride at the August bank holiday weekend.

The Night Tube operates Fridays and Saturdays on the Victoria, Central, Jubilee, Northern, and Piccadilly lines, covering most of the city's nightlife districts.
