Gay Guide to Liverpool
England and Wales decriminalized homosexuality in 1967 and opened marriage to same-sex couples in 2014. Liverpool, a port city with a long streak of independence and reinvention, built one of northern England's most spirited gay scenes in the streets just off its commercial center.
The heart of it is the Pride Quarter, centered on Stanley Street, the city's gay axis for decades. The short run of bars here includes The Lisbon, Liverpool's oldest gay venue with a following stretching back to the 1960s, and the strip stays loud with drag, karaoke, and late clubs at the weekend.
The Quarter is walkable from the waterfront and the main shopping streets, so a night out folds easily into a wider Liverpool trip. The crowd is warm, unpretentious, and famously up for it.
Liverpool Pride fills the Quarter and the waterfront across a weekend each summer, held close to August 2 in memory of Michael Causer, a young gay man murdered in the city in 2008. It has grown into one of the largest free Pride festivals in the UK.
