Marriage equality reached Florida in 2015, and Jacksonville, the sprawling river city in the state's northeast, holds a queer history that runs deeper than its low-key reputation suggests. Residents held the city's first Gay Pride Festival in a Riverside park back in 1978.
Queer life centers on the historic, walkable neighborhoods west of downtown, above all Riverside and Avondale and the bohemian Five Points, the city's original gayborhood, with pockets in Springfield and San Marco. Park Place Lounge, the oldest surviving gay bar in town, anchors the nightlife alongside the dance-and-drag club Incahoots and newer downtown cocktail bars.
