Gay Guide to Hat Yai
Thailand legalized same-sex marriage in January 2025, the first country in Southeast Asia to do so, and its long-standing reputation for tolerance makes it one of the most welcoming destinations in Asia for LGBTQ+ travelers. Hat Yai, the largest city in the deep south and a gateway for visitors from neighboring Malaysia, shares that easygoing acceptance, if on a much smaller scale than Bangkok or Phuket.
The scene here is discreet and low-key rather than a nightlife spectacle. Elysium Sauna, the only dedicated gay sauna in southern Thailand, is the best-known venue, drawing a mix of Thai locals and Malaysian weekend visitors, and a cluster of gay-friendly bars sits around the city's central shopping and nightlife district.
Hat Yai is safe and comfortable for LGBTQ+ visitors, with none of the legal worry found across the border. It works best as a relaxed, authentic stop rather than a party destination, and its cross-border crowd gives the small scene a distinctive character.
