Gay Guide to Fortaleza
Brazil legalized same-sex marriage in 2013 and criminalized homophobia and transphobia in 2019. Fortaleza, a sunny beach metropolis on Brazil's northeast coast, is known as one of the country's most gay-friendly cities, with a lively scene that runs from the sand to the nightclubs.
The heart of gay Fortaleza is the Meireles neighborhood, home to a concentration of LGBTQ+-owned bars, clubs, and restaurants, with drag and cabaret a regular fixture.
By day, the scene spreads to the beaches, especially Praia de Iracema near the center and the long Praia do Futuro, both popular with LGBTQ+ locals and visitors.
Fortaleza's Pride parade, the Parada da Diversidade Sexual, draws thousands to Meireles each year, alongside an annual gay beach party on Iracema.
