Gay Guide to Chennai
Chennai anchors queer life in Tamil Nadu, a state that has moved further than most of India on transgender welfare and reform of how LGBTQ+ people are policed. India decriminalized consensual same-sex relations in 2018, when the Supreme Court read down the colonial-era Section 377, and the city's community had long been organizing toward that change.
The Chennai Rainbow Pride march has run every June since 2009, uniquely timed to coincide with global Pride Month, and is known for a self-respect framing that ties queer liberation to Tamil Nadu's anti-caste tradition. A month of panels, screenings, and cultural events usually precedes the march.
Chennai is more conservative in its public nightlife than Delhi or Bangalore, without a designated gay district, and the scene runs largely through organizations, online networks, and Pride-season events rather than open bars.
Public affection draws attention here, and discretion is common in everyday settings, but Chennai's activist infrastructure and its distinctive June Pride give the city a queer identity all its own.
