About LGBTQ+ Cape Town
South Africa's 1996 constitution was the first in the world to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and in 2006 the country became the first in Africa to open marriage. Thirty years on, the gap between that document and ordinary life is the defining fact. The protections are real and enforceable in court. So is the violence directed at Black lesbians and trans people in the townships, which the state has been slow and inconsistent in confronting. Cape Town is safe, welcoming and straightforward for a visitor, and it is worth holding both halves of that in mind.
De Waterkant is the quarter, a small grid of restored Cape Dutch terraces stacked below Signal Hill and the most concentrated gay district on the continent. Crew Bar and Bar Amsterdam carry the nightlife, Café Manhattan has been the reliable restaurant for years, and the De Waterkant House and Lodge sit within the same few streets.

The rest is spread across the city bowl. Beaulah, Zer021, ARCADE and the Pink Panther cover the bars and clubs, Shaft out in Observatory and the Stargate sauna handle the cruisier end, and the Pink Rose and the Grand Daddy are the other places to stay.
Clifton Third Beach is the gay beach, tucked below the mountains among granite boulders, spectacular to look at and genuinely cold to swim in. The wind decides which of the four Clifton beaches is usable on any given day.
Cape Town Pride runs at the end of the southern summer, and the Mother City Queer Project, the costume party that has been going since the 1990s, is the event locals actually plan their year around. Triangle Project and SistaazHood do the advocacy and outreach work behind all of it.
