About LGBTQ+ Pretoria

South Africa's constitution was the first in the world to protect people from discrimination based on sexual orientation, and same-sex marriage has been legal since 2006. Pretoria, the jacaranda-lined administrative capital just north of Johannesburg, holds a welcoming, if lower-key, queer scene.

The heart of it runs along Church Street and the surrounding Hatfield and Brooklyn areas, a stretch of galleries, restaurants, and bars where the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife mixes into a broader trendy scene. It reads as relaxed and integrated rather than concentrated in a single gay village.
