About LGBTQ+ Durban
South Africa's post-apartheid constitution was the first in the world to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation, and the country legalized same-sex marriage in 2006, the first in Africa to do so. Durban, the warm-water port on the Indian Ocean, brings that legal freedom to a laid-back, subtropical setting.
The scene is smaller than Cape Town's or Johannesburg's but genuine and community-minded, with gay and gay-friendly bars and clubs like Pride of Durban and Club Altitude scattered through the central city rather than in one district. The mood is friendly and inclusive, matching the city's easygoing beach culture along the Golden Mile.
