Gay Guide to Calgary
Canada opened marriage to same-sex couples nationwide in 2005, the fourth country in the world to do so. Calgary, Alberta's booming prairie city near the Rockies, has a friendly, close-knit gay scene with a strong sense of community.
The hub is the Beltline, the dense neighborhood just south of downtown around Victoria Park, home to most of the city's gay bars and clubs. Long-running venues like The Backlot, one of Calgary's oldest, sit alongside high-energy dance spots, all central and easy to reach. The scene is smaller than in Toronto or Vancouver but warm and welcoming.
Calgary pairs its Stampede-and-mountains image with a quietly growing queer culture, an easy base before heading west to Banff and the Rockies.
Calgary Pride fills the streets from late August into early September with a parade, a festival, and a week of events across the city.
