About LGBTQ+ Portland
In November 1912 the interrogation of a teenage shoplifter set off the largest gay scandal in Portland's history. He named men who had, in the language of the day, corrupted him. Nearly seventy were charged. Newspapers printed names and addresses, careers ended, and men left the city. Three were convicted, and the Oregon Supreme Court threw the convictions out on technicalities. The scandal is remembered less for the prosecutions than for what it revealed: a gay social world already well established in a city of a quarter of a million people.
The through-line from that to now runs through one person. In the late 1960s Walter Cole bought a rundown Old Town tavern and started performing in drag as Darcelle XV. Guinness certified him the world's oldest working drag queen in 2016. He was still performing when he died in 2023 at ninety-two. The showplace is still open, still running what Guinness called the longest-running drag show on the West Coast, and the city has named a downtown plaza after him.
