Gay Guide to Birmingham
England decriminalized homosexuality in 1967 and opened marriage to same-sex couples in 2014. Birmingham, Britain's big-hearted second city, is home to one of the country's most established gay villages, a compact and famously friendly patch of the center.
The scene is anchored on Hurst Street, a short walk from the Bullring and the Hippodrome theatre, where dozens of bars and clubs sit within a ten-minute stroll. The Nightingale Club, open since 1989, is the largest gay club in the Midlands and a long-standing landmark of the Village, joined by cabaret bars, cafes, and late dance floors.
The Village runs on warmth and drag as much as on big nights out, and its central location makes it an easy add-on to any trip through the West Midlands.
Birmingham Pride takes over the Village across the late-May bank holiday weekend, with a parade from Victoria Square drawing tens of thousands before a ticketed festival of main-stage acts and cabaret. It is one of the largest Pride celebrations outside London.
