Gay Guide to Antwerp
Belgium decriminalized homosexuality under the Napoleonic Code in 1795 and, in 2003, became the second country in the world to open marriage to same-sex couples. Antwerp, the country's diamond and fashion capital, has carried an easy, openly gay presence ever since, woven through a city that prizes design and nightlife.
The compact gay scene clusters around Sint-Jansvliet and the lanes between Central Station and the old center, with a second, edgier pocket in the once-gritty Schipperskwartier near the docks. Everything sits within easy walking distance, and the mood leans toward intimate cafe-bars rather than giant clubs.
A handful of dedicated bars and a couple of late clubs anchor the nightlife, drawing a loyal local crowd plus visitors in from Brussels and the Netherlands. The city's fashion-school energy gives the scene a stylish, understated edge.
Antwerp Pride takes over the center on the first weekend of August, building to a Saturday afternoon parade of floats through the historic core. It is one of Flanders' biggest queer gatherings and the best week of the year to see the city at full volume.
