About LGBTQ+ Ulaanbaatar
Mongolia decriminalized homosexuality in 1993 and later made discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity a criminal offense under a reformed penal code, giving the country some of the clearer legal protections in the region. Ulaanbaatar, home to nearly half the nation's population, is the center of that progress and by far its most tolerant place.
The capital sustains an active LGBTQ+ civil society, anchored by the long-running LGBT Centre Mongolia, founded in 2007. Each August the community holds its Equality Walk, a Pride event that combines a downtown parade with a concert, a film festival, and an after-party, and a few gay-friendly venues operate in the central districts year-round.

Progress is real but young, and social attitudes outside activist circles remain conservative. Ulaanbaatar is welcoming for LGBTQ+ travelers by regional standards, though public displays of affection are still best kept discreet.
