About LGBTQ+ Beijing
China decriminalized homosexuality in 1997 and removed it from the official list of mental illnesses in 2001, but the country has never recognized same-sex marriage or passed anti-discrimination protections, and since 2018 the space for public LGBTQ+ visibility has narrowed sharply as Pride gatherings and online content have been curtailed. Beijing's queer life runs on a quiet, don't-ask-don't-tell understanding: not prosecuted, not celebrated in the open.
Within that reality the capital still holds one of mainland China's most durable gay nightlife scenes. Destination, the long-running club near the Workers' Stadium area in Chaoyang, has anchored it for years, drawing a mix of locals and international visitors, with smaller bars scattered nearby.

It operates in a legally grey zone in China and faces occasional disruption, but has continued to serve as a vital platform for queer visibility in the country.
