Gay Guide to Newcastle upon Tyne
England and Wales decriminalised sex between men in 1967, and Newcastle's gay scene has been rooted in the same few streets since the 1970s. The Pink Triangle runs between Central Station and the arena, around Scotswood Road, Westmorland Road and Times Square by the Centre for Life.
The Yard on Scotswood Road, open for around forty years, is the city's oldest gay pub, with drag shows, and The Eagle, further along the same road, has been the leather, denim and uniform bar since 2000. Bobby's, also on Scotswood Road, runs its own Drag Idol contest.
Rusty's, by the Centre for Life, does cabaret and drag, Boulevard on Churchill Street is a long-running cabaret bar with seated, table-service drag and Broadway nights, and Powerhouse on Westmorland Road is the late-night club.
Newcastle Pride takes over the city in late July. Northern Pride, which ran it for 17 years, stopped trading in November 2025, and Curious Futures took over the festival from 2026.
