About LGBTQ+ Mammoth Lakes

California's marriage story took three turns. The state Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in May 2008, Proposition 8 banned it again that November, and marriages resumed for good in June 2013 after the US Supreme Court let a federal ruling against Prop 8 stand.

Mammoth Lakes sits high on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada in Mono County, around five hours' drive north of Los Angeles, and Mammoth Mountain draws a long season of skiers, most of them up from Southern California.

Elevation Mammoth, the town's gay ski week, reaches its 25th edition from March 17 to 21, 2027. Presented by Tom Whitman, it brings around 2,500 skiers and riders to the mountain for days on the slopes and nights of parties.

Eastern Sierra Pride keeps things going the rest of the year. The nonprofit runs monthly meetups at the Warming Hut on Old Mammoth Road and at Mountain Rambler Brewery down the highway in Bishop, a queer book club and, with Mono County Behavioral Health, a family support group and a monthly potluck. Its Pride Festival takes over Canyon Lodge on Mammoth Mountain each June with drag, music and dance parties, and reached its fifth year in 2026.

Summer is the other season here. The ski area turns into a bike park and the Lakes Basin opens up for hiking, and that is when the Pride Festival lands.
