Gay Guide to León
Same-sex marriage is legal across Mexico, though Guanajuato remains one of the country's more conservative, Catholic states. León, its largest city, has quietly built the biggest gay scene in the state.
La Madame on the Malecón del Río de los Gómez is the main night out, a disco with elaborate drag shows and karaoke, and Club Elite in Rinconada del Sur runs stripper, go-go and drag shows. In the Centro, Reyina on Calle Madero does drag with a DJ.
Soma Sauna on Calzada de los Héroes and the traditional Baños Altamar in colonia Obregón cover the bathhouse end.
Pride León marches on a Saturday in early June from Parque Hidalgo along Boulevard Adolfo López Mateos to the Arco de la Calzada, with performances in the main square afterwards. Given the region's traditional tenor, visitors tend to keep public affection to the city's queer-friendly spaces.
