About Kiel

Gay Guide to Kiel

Germany repealed the last of Paragraph 175 in 1994 and opened marriage to same-sex couples in 2017. Kiel, the Baltic port capital of Schleswig-Holstein, has a small, friendly scene, most of it in or near the city centre.

Birdcage on Rathausstraße, a cocktail bar for gays, lesbians and friends with around 300 drinks on the menu, has been a community fixture for more than twenty years, and Harlekin on Kirchhofallee, just south of the centre, is Kiel's oldest gay bar, a traditional pub.

HAKI on Walkerdamm is the state's LGBTIQ+ organisation and meeting space, serving lesbian, gay, bi, trans, inter and queer people across Schleswig-Holstein.

CSD Kiel in July is the main Pride in Germany's northernmost state, with a demonstration through the city and a street festival on the Rathausplatz.
