Gay Guide to Cardiff
Wales decriminalized homosexuality alongside England in 1967, and same-sex marriage became law across England and Wales in 2014. Cardiff, the Welsh capital, keeps a compact, sociable gay scene right in the middle of the city.
The gay village is a tight cluster around Charles Street and Churchill Way in the center, where the bars, dance clubs, and a sauna sit within a couple of minutes of each other. It is walkable, unpretentious, and easy to fold into a weekend built around the castle, the arcades, and the waterfront at Cardiff Bay.
The scene is small but spirited, with a strong sense of community for a city of its size.
Pride Cymru, the successor to Cardiff Mardi Gras, takes over the capital each August bank holiday weekend, drawing tens of thousands for cabaret, live music, and a parade through the center.
