England decriminalized homosexuality in 1967 and opened marriage to same-sex couples in 2014. Bristol, the creative, independent-minded capital of the West Country, keeps a warm and varied gay scene split across two central pockets.
The historic Old Market, one of the oldest parts of the city, is its traditional gay village, home to the UK's only dedicated bear bar and a run of welcoming pubs and late venues. Bristol Pride has grown into one of Britain's largest Pride festivals, filling the city and the Downs each July with a parade and a full day of music and community events.
