Gay Guide to Albany
New York State legalized same-sex marriage in 2011, ahead of the national ruling, and Albany, the state capital, carries an outsized LGBTQ+ history for a mid-size city. It is home to the Pride Center of the Capital Region, the oldest continuously operating LGBTQ+ center in the country, running since 1970.
The social heart of the community is Lark Street, the bohemian strip of bars, cafes, and independent shops that has anchored queer Albany for decades. Waterworks Pub, at the edge of the gay village, is the city's main gay dance club, joined by a handful of neighborhood stalwarts in a scene that is small, friendly, and deeply rooted.

Capital Pride brings a parade through the city and a festival at Washington Park each June, the community's flagship celebration.
