Arizona gained marriage equality in 2014, and Tucson, the laid-back desert university city, has long had a live-and-let-live streak.
The nightlife concentrates around the urban core, especially the funky Fourth Avenue strip and Downtown, where IBT's anchors a scene of dance floors, drag and easygoing neighborhood patios.
Tucson Pride, founded in 1977 and long described as Arizona's oldest LGBTQ+ organization, ran the city's Pride for nearly 50 years, including the autumn Pride in the Desert festival. In January 2026 it cancelled that year's festival, citing falling donations and sponsorship, and began winding down.
Ringed by saguaro-studded mountains, Tucson pairs Sonoran food, desert light and a relaxed college-town feel with a welcoming queer culture.
