About LGBTQ+ Tijuana
Tijuana is a border city, and for LGBTQ+ people that is most of the story. Casa Arcoíris, a thirty-five bed shelter in a rented house, has taken in queer and trans migrants since February 2019: people who left Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador because of who they are, waiting on asylum claims in the United States or trying to build something in Mexico instead. Residents have described criminal groups back home deliberately using LGBTQ+ people as drug couriers on the reasoning that police are less likely to stop them. Mexico has had marriage equality in all thirty-two states since 2022. That legal fact and the queue at that shelter sit a few miles apart.
The scene itself is in the Zona Centro, walkable from the pedestrian border crossing and centered on the blocks around Avenida Revolución. Camaleón, Bendito Cabrón, Sodome, Coyote, Latinos, Hawaii, Ranchero, Our Secrets, Yei Yei and The Loft cover the bars, with Club Premier and Fusion taking the club nights and Baños La Toalla the bathhouse end.

It is cheap, loud and runs very late, and a good share of any weekend crowd has crossed from San Diego for the evening and will cross back in the morning. COCUT handles local community work.
The usual Tijuana advice applies and is not specific to gay visitors: stay in the tourist zones, use authorized transport rather than street taxis, and do not wander unfamiliar areas after dark.
Crossing north takes as long as it takes, which on a Sunday morning can be a great deal longer than anyone plans for. Build it into the night.
