About LGBTQ+ Sendai
Japan has no national same-sex marriage, though partnership certificates are spreading city by city and courts have repeatedly ruled the ban unconstitutional. Sendai, the largest city in the Tohoku region, has quietly sustained an LGBTQ+ community for years, centered on its lively entertainment quarter.
That quarter is Kokubuncho, Sendai's main nightlife district, where the city's best-known gay bars gather, including long-running spots and welcoming newer venues. The scene is smaller than Tokyo's Shinjuku Ni-chome or Osaka's Doyama, but it is friendly, established, and easy to dip into.
