Gay Guide to Sarajevo
Bosnia and Herzegovina decriminalized homosexuality in 1998 and recognizes no same-sex partnerships, and Sarajevo remains one of the more challenging capitals in Europe for open queer life. The city has little in the way of dedicated gay venues, and its LGBTQ+ community has had to carve out space carefully.
That makes what does exist all the more meaningful. In 2019, Sarajevo held Bosnia's first-ever Pride march, the last Balkan capital to do so, drawing more than two thousand people under heavy police protection in a landmark moment for the country. Beyond such events, queer life runs largely through community organizations, private gatherings, and a handful of welcoming, if not explicitly gay, spaces in the center.
Sarajevo, the mountain-ringed city where East and West meet, carries a complex history and a community showing quiet, determined courage.
The BiH Pride March has continued in the years since 2019 as the country's flagship act of LGBTQ+ visibility.
