Bolivia recognized same-sex civil unions in 2020, though marriage is not legal and much of this conservative country stays cautious. Santa Cruz de la Sierra, the tropical lowland boomtown that is Bolivia's largest and most liberal city, is the clear center of its queer life, home to leading LGBTQ+ rights groups and host of the country's first Pride march back in 2001.
