Italy recognized same-sex civil unions in 2016, and Palermo, the sun-baked capital of Sicily, holds a paradox: deep-rooted social conservatism alongside one of southern Italy's most vibrant LGBTQ+ communities. It is, comfortably, the gay capital of the island.
The scene concentrates in the atmospheric centro storico, in the tangle of streets around the Ballaro and Vucciria markets, where a small cluster of gay bars, clubs, and saunas has grown over the past decade. The historic center is generally relaxed for LGBTQ+ visitors, though attitudes can turn more traditional in the outer neighborhoods.
