About LGBTQ+ Houston

On 17 September 1998 Houston police went to John Lawrence's apartment after a neighbor falsely reported a man going crazy with a gun. They found Lawrence and Tyron Garner having sex and arrested them both under the state's homosexual conduct law, which criminalized acts that were entirely legal between a man and a woman. They spent the night in a cell. Five years later the Supreme Court decided Lawrence v. Texas, struck the statute down, overruled Bowers v. Hardwick and ended sodomy laws across the country. Houston went on to elect Annise Parker in 2009, the first openly gay mayor of a major American city, and then in 2015 its voters repealed her equal rights ordinance after a campaign fought over bathrooms. The city contains both of those facts without much difficulty.

Montrose has been the district since the 1970s, strung along Westheimer Road and the streets off it. JR's, South Beach, Barcode, Buddy's, Crocker and Blur cover the main run, with the Ripcord anchoring the leather end, and Niko Niko's and Boheme feeding everyone in between. Rents have climbed hard here and the district is smaller than it was, which locals will tell you about at length.

Houston is flat, hot, and built for driving, and it is routinely ranked the most ethnically diverse large city in the United States. Both things show up in the scene: you drive between places, and the rooms look like the city.
