Gay Guide to Norfolk

Marriage equality reached Virginia in 2014. Norfolk, the coastal heart of the Hampton Roads region and home to the world's largest naval base, has grown into the area's most visible and welcoming LGBTQ+ hub.

Queer life gathers around the historic Ghent neighborhood, the walkable, tree-lined district near downtown, and the arts-driven NEON District nearby, where inclusive bars, coffeehouses, and shops cluster. Long-running venues like The Wave and MJ's Tavern anchor a nightlife that mixes high-energy drag and dance with easygoing neighborhood spots.

Norfolk pairs its waterfront and its arts scene with a queer community that has become a vital, established part of the city's culture.

For more than thirty years, Hampton Roads Pride has brought a festival and a distinctive waterfront boat parade to Norfolk each summer, one of the region's biggest LGBTQ+ celebrations.
